This is the first real decision in smart lighting, and getting it wrong is expensive β you find out after you have bought eight bulbs.
The choice looks simple: make the globe smart, or make the switch smart. The consequences are not.
The case for smart bulbs
Smart bulbs put the intelligence in the globe itself. Screw it in, connect it, done.
They are the only sensible choice if you rent. No wiring, no electrician, no landlord permission, and you take them with you. In a country where a large share of households rent, this alone decides it for many people.
They do colour. If you want tunable white for circadian lighting, or colour for ambience, this must happen at the globe. A smart switch controlling a dumb warm-white globe gives you a dumb warm-white globe you can schedule.
They give per-globe control. In a fitting with several globes, each can be addressed individually β occasionally useful, mostly a novelty.
Setup is trivial. No licensed trade involved, no risk, no cost beyond the globes.
The problem that ruins smart bulbs
Someone flicks the wall switch off. The bulb has no power. Now it does not respond to your app, your voice assistant or your automations. Your schedule silently stops working, and you discover this at 10pm when the lights do not come on.
This is not a minor annoyance. It is the reason many people abandon smart bulbs. Guests do it, children do it, and household members who did not choose this system do it deliberately because flicking a switch is faster than opening an app.
Partial solutions exist β physical switch guards, or replacing the wall switch with a smart switch set to always deliver power while the bulb handles the dimming. The second works well but means buying both, which undercuts the cost argument.
The cost problem
Smart bulbs are priced per globe. A kitchen with six downlights needs six smart globes. A house with forty light fittings is not a smart bulb project β it is a mortgage.
The case for smart switches
Smart switches put the intelligence in the wall, controlling whatever globes are already there.
One switch covers a whole circuit. Six downlights on one switch means one smart switch, not six smart globes. For multi-globe rooms, the economics invert completely.
The switch still works. This sounds trivial and it is the most important thing about them. Anyone can walk in and flick the switch, and the system stays consistent. Automations and manual control coexist instead of fighting.
No power interruption problem. The globes are always powered. Nothing is ever unreachable.
They look normal. A house full of smart switches looks like a house. Guests do not need instructions.
The problems with smart switches
In Australia, you cannot install them yourself. Fixed electrical wiring work must be carried out by a licensed electrician in every Australian state and territory, and replacing a wall switch qualifies. This is genuinely different from the US and UK, where homeowners have more latitude, and it is why so much online advice does not apply here. Budget for a sparky, and get several switches done in one visit to spread the call-out fee.
Renters are mostly out. Modifying fixed wiring in a rental needs the owner's permission and an electrician, and you cannot take it with you.
The neutral wire problem. Most smart switches need constant power to keep their radio alive, which requires a neutral wire in the switch box. Many Australian homes β particularly anything wired decades ago as a switch loop β do not have one. No-neutral switches exist and work by trickling a tiny current through the load, but this can cause LED globes to flicker or glow faintly when off. If you are unsure, have your electrician check the switch box before you buy anything.
No colour. A smart switch cannot make a dumb globe change colour.
Dimming compatibility. Not every LED globe dims cleanly on every dimmer. Mismatches produce flicker, buzz or a limited dimming range. Check the switch manufacturer's compatibility list against your globes.
The Australian fitting trap
Before you buy any globe, check the fitting.
Australia uses B22 bayonet widely, especially in older housing β the push-and-twist fitting. We also use E27 Edison screw, which is increasingly common in newer builds and imported fittings.
Most of the world's smart bulb ranges are designed around E27, or the American E26 which looks nearly identical to E27 but is not quite the same. Cheaper imported ranges frequently skip B22 altogether.
The result is predictable: someone orders a bargain smart bulb multipack from an overseas seller, and the globes physically will not fit their light fittings.
Check the fitting on your existing globe before ordering anything, and prefer Australian retailers where B22 stock is normal rather than an afterthought.
Downlights add another wrinkle. Many Australian homes have integrated LED downlights with no replaceable globe at all β the whole fitting is the light. Those cannot be made smart with a bulb. Your options are a smart switch, or replacing the fittings entirely, which is again electrician work.
A practical recommendation
If you rent: smart bulbs, and accept the switch problem. Buy a couple of switch guards for the rooms that matter.
If you own and the room has one or two globes: either works. Bulbs if you want colour, switches if you want it to feel invisible.
If you own and the room has multiple globes or downlights: smart switches, every time. The maths is not close.
If you own and want the best of both: smart switches on the wall, smart bulbs in the fittings where colour matters, with the switch configured to keep power on permanently. Expensive, but it is the setup that actually works long-term.
