If you read smart home guides written in the United States or the United Kingdom, you will find plenty of confident instructions for swapping out a light switch. Turn off the breaker, note the wires, connect the new switch, done.
Do not follow that advice here. Australia's rules are considerably stricter than most of the English-speaking internet assumes, and the consequences of ignoring them extend well past a fine.
The rule, plainly
In every Australian state and territory, fixed electrical wiring work must be carried out by a licensed electrician. There is no general homeowner exemption of the kind that exists in parts of the US.
"Fixed wiring work" covers anything connected permanently to your home's electrical installation rather than plugged into a socket. For smart home purposes that includes:
- Replacing or installing a light switch β including smart switches and dimmers
- Replacing or installing a power point
- Installing hardwired downlights or light fittings
- Wiring a hardwired smart doorbell transformer
- Installing hardwired smoke alarms
- Anything inside your switchboard
- Hardwiring an EV charger, air conditioner or hot water controller
The specific legislation differs by jurisdiction β each state and territory has its own electrical safety regulator and licensing regime β but the outcome is consistent across the country. Work must also comply with AS/NZS 3000, the Wiring Rules.
What you can freely do
The line is essentially the plug. If a device connects to your home via a standard plug and socket, it is a consumer appliance and installing it is unrestricted.
That leaves an enormous amount of smart home territory open:
- Smart plugs of every kind
- Smart bulbs β screwing in a globe is not electrical work
- Plug-in and battery cameras, indoor and outdoor
- Battery sensors β door, window, motion, temperature, water leak
- Hubs, bridges and speakers
- Battery-powered video doorbells β the wire-free kind
- Low-voltage devices running from a plug-pack or USB
- Anything on a USB port
You can build a genuinely capable smart home entirely from this list. Many people do.
Why this actually matters
It is tempting to treat this as a technicality. Three reasons not to.
Insurance. Insurers frequently exclude losses arising from unlicensed electrical work. If a fire starts and the investigation identifies non-compliant wiring you installed, you may be left carrying the loss yourself. That is a catastrophic outcome next to the cost of a call-out fee.
Selling the house. Non-compliant work discovered during a sale or inspection has to be rectified, sometimes with the walls open. Buyers' building inspectors do look at switchboards.
It is genuinely dangerous. Australian mains supply is 230β240V, roughly double the US standard. The margin for error is smaller and the consequences of a mistake are worse. This is not a place to learn.
Working with an electrician on a smart home project
A few practical things that make this cheaper and less painful.
Batch the work. Call-out fees dominate small jobs. Getting eight smart switches installed in one visit costs far less per switch than eight separate visits. Plan the whole house before you book.
Check the neutral before you buy. Most smart switches need a neutral wire in the wall box, and many older Australian homes wired as a switch loop do not have one. Ask your electrician to check a representative switch box before you order hardware. Discovering this after the switches arrive is a common and avoidable frustration.
Confirm the box depth. Smart switches are deeper than the mechanical switches they replace. Shallow wall boxes sometimes will not accommodate them, and the electrician may need to modify the box.
Buy Australian-certified hardware. Any mains-connected device must be approved for sale in Australia. An electrician may reasonably decline to install a grey-import switch with no local approval marking, and they would be right to. This is the strongest argument for buying mains-powered smart home gear locally rather than from overseas marketplaces.
Ask about the switchboard. If you are considering energy monitoring at the meter, hot water control or an EV charger, have the electrician assess your switchboard capacity while they are there. Older boards frequently need upgrading, and knowing that early prevents a nasty surprise.
A note on smoke alarms
Smoke alarm requirements are set by state and territory legislation and have tightened considerably in recent years, with several jurisdictions mandating interconnected alarms in particular circumstances. Requirements differ meaningfully depending on where you live and whether the property is owner-occupied, rented or newly built.
If you are considering smart smoke alarms, treat compliance as the primary requirement and the smart features as secondary. Check your own state's current rules with the relevant fire service or regulator, and have hardwired units installed by an electrician.
The practical takeaway
Build what you can from plug-in and battery devices β that is most of a smart home, and none of it needs anyone's permission.
For the parts that need wiring, budget for a licensed electrician, plan the work in one batch, and confirm the neutral situation before you spend money on hardware.
It costs more than the DIY advice you will read elsewhere. It is also the only version that is legal, insurable and safe here.
